Astraea–her name echoed like an old hymn, distant and half-remember. He watched her reach for the brightest tendril, her fingers caressed the glowing thread as if it were an old friend. The glow steadied her, as if it were a sacred oath re-sworn. Even the primordials trembled beneath its ethereal glow. And with each pulse of the thread, Veles could almost feel her shiver–could feel the vibrations in his own bones, as if the thread bound them together.

Veles remembered the words etched in the Kizmi Codex of Fates–scribed by the first Threadwalkers beneath the living light. The prophecy had lived within him for centuries, quiet and heavy: one life, if primordials, fae, and humans wished to remain. The tendrils mourned around her, and he knew then, that she felt his shadows–his birthright, his burden–shiver beside her. He was bound by a vow older than stars, a tether he’d never had the strength to sever. He could feel his heart clench. Even the God of shadows trembled, knowing the price that must be paid.

Her gaze lingered on his shadows, and something warm flickered across her features–as if she could feel the ache he carried, and knew it was for her. “I’ve already made my peace with it, Veles,” she said, her voice trembling in her unraveling sorrow.

They were held together by a fragile immortality–woven from memory and sustained by a vow neither dared to break. He breathed in the scent of moonbloom, allowing its sorrow and the distant thrum of the Basin settle in his chest. In the stillness between heartbeats, he could feel her silence–and the echo of his own unspoken plea. Guilt filled his heart, each pulse a reminder of how he’d failed her, how he’d let it come to this. The sacrifice she would now make–a price he couldn’t stop her from paying.

All he could do was watch as the tendril slipped through her fingers, his heart breaking as she stepped from the Threadwalk–its fading light leaving behind a faint scorch that seemed to cool to a thin layer of verglas against her palm, as if memory had branded her, then chose to forget the vow it had made with her long ago. With its severed glow, the world trembled--threads of memory recoiling from what had been undone. He could almost taste the moonbloom in the air–bittersweet as the vow she had chosen to fulfill.

Velar startled awake, his throat raw–as if he’d been screaming in his sleep. He sat upright, hand clenched to his chest, as the sorrowful silence wrapped around him. Sweat clung to his brow, but the chill in the room left him trembling, as if something sacred had been left behind.

His hands balled in the sheets, his knuckles white. He could already feel it slipping away, could feel her slipping away, and it filled him with an ache that cut deep into his soul. A female. A Basin. A thread of light unraveling between her fingers. Her name hovered at the edge of his memory, sharp as his blade but soft as her voice.

“A…astraea,” he whispered into the quiet of his room.
It didn’t sound right. Or maybe it sounded too right–and that scared him more.

As the name faded into the night, it tugged at something deep inside him–something that sent a chill through him. It took him a moment to unclench his fists from

the sheets, one of his hands pressing flat against his chest, trying to steady the rhythm beneath. The scent of moonbloom lingered in the air. But the flowers tied to her rebirth were nowhere to be seen.

He watched the sky from his window. The stars were unmoving. And he could feel something inside him start to come undone.

Velar paused in the doorway.

His cloak slipped off one shoulder. His breath had yet to steady. The dream clung to him–like moonbloom clung to the air–not in memories, but in the ache they left behind. A weight in his chest. A name he couldn’t hold on to. It was a grief that echoed through him, though it wasn’t his to carry.

The wind carried no scent. Still, he could taste moonbloom again–bittersweet, familiar, yet impossible.

He couldn’t remember when he’d decided to leave. Could only feel the cold night air against his skin, and the way the dream seemed to guide his steps. Moving through the hallway, slow and silent, the hum beneath his feet grew louder with each step. The world shifted towards him, as if it too were trying to remember.

The Moonstone Basin was the only thing that stood in the ruins–a forgotten altar, half-buried from time. The stone had been cracked with age. The sacred threads etched into it had long since faded. Something shimmered in the dust. A soft flicker of memory reaching out to the woman who once tended the Basin.

Velar stepped closer, his reflection flickering in the water’s surface–like a memory trying to take shape. But it wasn’t just his reflection. A woman shimmered beside him, half remembered. Petals of moonbloom adorned her shoulders, her eyes–full of stars. Constellations half remembered.

Velar froze. But the reflection didn’t vanish. This wasn’t a trick of light. It wasn’t a dream either. She stood behind him, her reflection rippling up through the water. Moonbloom petals shimmered in the water’s surface, drifting upward from the woman behind him.

“I wondered if you’d remember,” Auroralili murmured, her voice cool. This wasn’t an accusation. However, she also wasn’t ready to forgive him. The truth lingered between them.

He turned slowly. The ache in his chest stealing his breath. She appeared just like she had in his dream. Beautiful. Full of Sorrow. She looked at him. Something flickering in her eyes. Was it resolved…or was it regret?

“How?!” his eyes widened. “I saw you,” he whispered, his voice wavering. “In the Threadwalk. In the Basin. I saw the vow you made.”

Auroralili stepped closer, her fingers brushing the fractured rim of moonstone. The basin pulsed beneath her finger tips–a quiet hum, like a heartbeat buried deep in the ground.

“You saw what the Basin allowed,” she said softly. “But the vow…the vow was mine to bear.”

Velar drew in a breath, the scent of moonbloom curling around him–it was soft, sweet, and it made him ache, like a memory he’d forgotten. Above, the stars trembled.

She reached into her cloak, and drew a solitary petal. It was burned at the edges, yet still glowed silver. She placed the petal in the Basin and watched as it caught light. Memory rippled outward and across the sanctuary’s bones.

Velar stepped back, while Auroralili remained by the Basin, unmoving.

“I remember,” she said softly, the coolness gone from her voice. “The vow, the lifetimes, and what it cost me.”

The light faded. The petal remained. And for once, the silence didn’t feel so empty.
