They had not meant to find it. The map called it Mont Teehall, though the locals never did. The map was a rumour, traded between drunks and liars, ink layered over itself until it said nothing at all. But the mountain was real. The cave was real. And the stone door, buried beneath centuries of dust, opened when it should not have.

Inside, there was only the box. Smaller than expected. No gold, no ornament. Just a sealed thing, waiting.

“A joke,” Maren said.
“Or a story,” Kade replied. “And stories are worth more.” They took it anyway.

By the time the world learned what they claimed to have, the story had grown teeth. Pandora’s Box. Not a metaphor. Not a myth. Proof offered in fragments, in careful images, in the way both of them refused to touch the lid once it was closed again.

They made their demand. Recognition. Amnesty. Then money, because money was the only language anyone answered to. Enough to disappear.

They waited. Days passed. Then weeks.

“No one is answering,” Maren said, pacing the mouth of the cave. “You don’t threaten everyone. You pick one target. One. You negotiate.”

Kade sat with the box between his hands, staring at it as though it might answer. “They’re stalling.”
“They’re ignoring us.”
“They’re afraid.” “Or they think we’re bluffing.”

Kade’s fingers hovered near the lid. “We’re not.”

Maren stopped. “Don’t.”

The silence shifted. Not absence, but pressure. As if the mountain itself were listening.

The seam of the lid was not quite closed. Or it hadn’t been, a moment ago.

“We open it,” Kade said, quieter now. “Just enough. Just to prove it.”
“And if it’s real?” “Then they answer.”

A sound cut through the cave. Boots. Voices. Controlled, precise.

The light at the entrance fractured into moving shapes. “Down! Hands where we can see them!”

Maren flinched back. “Wait—” Kade didn’t move.

The box sat between them.

“Step away from the box and you walk out,” someone said.

Maren reached for Kade’s arm, voice low, urgent, breaking. “Take the deal,” she said.

Kade’s eyes flicked to the edges of the lid. For a moment, it almost seemed like the box was smiling.

He did not look at her. “Open the box.”
