“You’re already lying,” Kairo said. His voice was soft, almost polite. “Your heart rate increased 17% when you said ‘anything.’ You shifted your weight to the left, protective posture. You know something. You just don’t like that I’m here to take it.”

“I swear....”

Kairo stepped closer.

The coat parted just enough to reveal something beneath, thin, articulated instruments folded along his ribs like metallic ribs of their own. They slid free with a whisper. Not blades. Not exactly.

Extraction tools.

“Pain is inefficient,” Kairo said. “Messy. Subjective. I prefer clarity.”

One of the instruments extended, needle-fine, humming with a low frequency that made the air feel wrong.

The man started screaming before it even touched him.

“Wait...WAIT...I’ll tell you, I’ll......”

“Too late,” Kairo said.

The needle pressed into the base of the man’s skull.

Not piercing.

Phasing.

A flicker of light.

The man’s eyes went wide, then distant, then… empty.

When he stepped back, the man slumped forward, breathing shallow, alive, but hollowed out in ways no one would ever diagnose correctly.

Kairo’s eyes flickered.

Kairo’s gaze stayed distant.

“Everything,” he said. “And something new.”

The broker smiled.

“I like new.”

Kairo initiated the transfer.

Data streamed between them, clean, precise, valuable.

“What is this?” he asked.

“Unclassified,” Kairo said.

The broker’s interface flickered wildly as the fragment integrated.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then the broker staggered back.

His eyes widened.

He saw her.

Kairo could tell.

The rain. The laugh.

And something else.
