Meeting Roger
Avery got out of the car as she pulled Caden out of the car. She had to go upstairs and handle the business. She took the elevator up as Caden stood silent . They sat in the waiting room. Avery instructed Caden to stay put as he played on his tablet to occupy himself as his mom went in the conduct her business. The waiting room was empty.
Across the hallway Roger was finishing up his last client as he spotted a boy by himself outside Mr. Saviors office. It was one of his pet peeves when children were brought to a place of business and were left unattended like they were giving out free childcare inconsiderate parents . Didn't his mom know not to bring kids in a law office and then leave them unattended. Roger was going to bang on Mr. Savior door and remind him this was an office not a playground.
He watched the boy playing on his tablet like he was used to being left alone and it was no big deal he had no parents around him. He crossed his arms frustrated looking down at the occupied boy not paying attention to him in the room and cleared his throat at the boy sitting alone minding his own business.
" Excuse me . Boy where is your mother?,or is it accustomed of her to level her spawn in random places?" He said like he was annoyed at his presence. With this child being left alone in an office unattended . How unprepared his mother or father must be thought Roger as he hated kids in his office.
Caden put his tablet down and looked up at the man addressing him. Grey eyes matched grey eyes . Roger halter for a moment and looked at the door a moment wondering if she was in there. Then look back at the boy curiously. Then he really took in the boys features as he had the same ash blonde hair and grey eyes as Roger had . Down to the nose and jawline . It was like Roger was looking in the mirror at himself. Roger tried to shake the feeling like he should know this boy.
" My mom is in the office, sir. Just there." He said pointing to the door behind Roger. Caden was respectful and kept eye contact as he spoke." And I'm don't believe I'm a spawn. I'm a boy last time I checked?" He said as Roger cracked a smile at his quick witt.
" How long has she been in there. I mean how long will she be in there?" He said impatient on how long this boy will be unsupervised.
" I am not sure. We just got here. I don't even know why she brought me. I was fine in my room." Fussed Caden knowing he wasn't supposed to talk to strangers.
" Hey you have grey eyes like me. That is pretty cool " remarked Caden pointing out the obvious.
" What is your mother's name if I may ask?" He continued. As Roger had never met this boy but he seemed familiar as he looked at him.
" Avery jing, sir." He said simply. Roger took a calculated breath and then it hit him . This is my son. Of course he would be he looked exactly like me. Roger would have assumed he would take after Avery's black hair and crystal blue eyes and olive skin color but this boy was a spitting image of him.
" Are you are. I mean what's your name ?" Said Roger now trying to steady his voice. He was nervous now he realized his son was sitting right in front of him. He had thought Avery was lying since she was being so vague about the child. He wasn't around to witness the pregnancy and didn't know if it was a scheme to get him to commit to her.
" I'm Caden Jing. " He replied. Caden looked confused at the man as he noticed he stumbled over his words a little .
" Your about nine I take it ." Said Roger slowly. As he tried to recall the small amount of information Avery pointed out as she screamed at him last time she came to the office .
" Yes sir, I'll be ten in a few months . So I'm nine and three quarters ." He said proudly . As he sounded all accurate and proud of his portion of his age .
" Where did you get those grey eyes, little man ." Proned Roger for clarification. As his voice was softer and tender as he said them.
" My mom said it came from my father. I've never met him. Don't have any memories either. But that's what she said to me. " He answered honestly.
That moment Rogers heart beat skipped a little. A son. He had a son. He looked like him but those grey eyes. His grey eyes. Roger felt conflicted at how he felt when he saw the boy in front of him. Grey eyes were an Evenburg trait. His mother had grey eyes as well.
Just then Avery concluded her business as Mr. Savior opened the door to let her out as he was closing up his office to leave. Avery froze at the sight of Roger and Caden in the same room. She thought no no no not like this as she held her breath.
" Savior. I was just coming to see if you were going to set the alarm or shall I ." Said Roger not taking his eyes off of Caden .
" I'll walk Miss Jing and her son down to the lobby if you secure the office." He said offering his hand to Caden .
Caden glared at his hand as Avery intercepted the two and grabbed Caden's arm pulling him up. Avery Panicked how long were they talking for? She knew it was a bad idea to bring him here but she was not going to leave him with her mom either. She wasn't done torturing Roger over him and hers child.
" It's fine I can find my own way out ." She said protectively.
" Nonsense . I was headed out my own self we can share an elevator." Assisted Roger.
" Yes I'll close up. I'm still grabbing my things to leave. You take them to the lobby while I get the rest done." Said Mr . Savior as he turned his back to lock his office door.
Avery made a face at Roger as he smiled as he put his arm on her back and ushered her to the elevator. Caden reached for the call button because his mom always let him call the elevator when they rode one at the same time Roger hand did the same. Roger recoiled his hand as she saw Caden hit it first. He saw the kid do it first why did he feel like competing with the boy for the button. He smiled how fast the boy wanted to hit the button first as it was a thing he always did as a kid as well . The doors opened and Avery pulled Caden in as Roger stepped beside her.
The elevator music played as they rode the elevator down. Awkward silence in the air. The door opened in the lobby and Avery and Caden stepped out quickly. Roger thought should I say something or let them go. He weighed his decision.
" Avery. Wait." He yelled out following her.
Avery turned her heels to abruptly face him head on." Oh now you remembered my name." She said scornfully.
" Look. Can I take you and Caden to dinner. I haven't had a bite to eat and well since your here in town." He said in his charming way.
" My son and I have other plans . My mom is in town and we must be going? " She insisted on purpose to stake claim in her son as hers. She knew it was a ridiculous notion since Roger was his father. But not now he don't get to choose when to be in our lives not after almost ten years.
" It won't take long. " He leaded down to Caden " how about some mcdonolds it's been forever since I've had some burgers and fried perhaps a milkshake." He said addressing the boys eyes as they lit up.
" Can we mom . Can we. Mom don't let me have fast food a lot. " He said tugging on his mom's arm." Can we go with who are you ,sir?" He asked as he realized he didn't introduce himself.
" I am Roger. I'm your ...."
" Maybe next time . We have to get home to Nainai. " Said Avery cutting him off from revealing to much to her son as she pulled the boy away .
" She will be there exactly as we left her. She isn't going anywhere." Cried Caden. As he wasn't happy with his nainai being home any more than him returning to see her home either.
" I said no, Caden." As he pouted his lips in disappointment.
Roger loved the little boys will . He smiled at the boy encouraging his behavior." Avery you should let him have a milkshake at least for the road ." He negotiated.
" I am sorry we have to go. Perhaps I'll see you again in another ten years." She said swinging the defiant boy on her hip as she walked out of the building. Avery purposely said the last part to make it hurt to Roger the time it took him and he never checked up on her during that time frame. She wanted that last line to marinate in his thoughts.
Just than EXavier Savior came off the elevator Roger looked at the door as he caught up with him.
" EXavier . I need her number and address. " He said barking a order.
" Sir. " He replied confused.
" Did you see that boy .That's my son. " he said more to himself then shared information. He watched Avery get in her car and drive away.
" Your son sir are you sure?" Questioned Mr. Savior . He was confused how Roger knew his client little less had a child by her.
" Caden ." Roger said the name as he memorized it . Roger felt a small sence of pride and smile knowing he had a son and looked just like him too. He needed to know
this boy. He needed to know his son.
