The betrayal
Weeks went by and my periods started back as my mother still drug me to bowling matches because Dana refused to have anything to do with her. Around this time I had a convenient boyfriend that back in these days we loved the option of a three way calling and the access to the school directory that was published for all students to have in the school request forms .
I was fifteen and me and my friends would get on the phone and prank call the popular kids and order pizza all the while make innuendos trying not to get caught. One night we decided to call one of the three gods . Chad was the unlucky victim of our prank as my boyfriend I had been with for two weeks was listening in. It started all innocent as we didn't know Eric and the other boys would be at his house as I had the directory book and I did this so I called so the person on the other lines didn't get sensitive information.
I was weird like that giving people's numbers out knowing how bad practical jokes could get . It was going well as Chad recognized my voice from the few passing interactions we had passing in the hallway. Chad was the guy that had the natural coal eyeliner eyes that I liked. You could say he was the only human crush I had as usually if I liked you I just admitted it and was done with it. We had came to skating rink together where I would enter the skate competitions and win free passes and free food. At times he let me sit with them as the popular kids all monopolized the dark corner of the space beside the lockers.
I remember I was singing once and when one of the girls complained the music was too loud over there I said my apologies as I stopped singing. Chad didn't say a word to me just nodded at me like he recognized who I was. That was the night he started to pay attention to me. Chad didn't know my name just my voice and my face as he was never mean to me and my friend Jessi spilled the beans to him I liked him. He stopped our prank as he asked
"I know your voice your in my math class what's your name?" I was mid distracted as I answered.
" Melina mcnally ." I had never given my name to anyone in these pranks as he asked Eric to grab the yearbook and looked me up mid prank. I waited as he came back and was nice.
" Hey mel . How did you get my number?" He asked. But before I could answer my boyfriend spoke up.
" You don't need to know that and stop talking to my girlfriend before I mess you up?" He he said hostile. Immediately I knew it went too far as this was harmless fun and now because a gang up on Chad .
" Justin stop!" I protested as I knew it was going to be a stupid fight. " Justin who?" Asked chad as his pages began to flip through the yearbook once again.
" None off your fucking business. Leave my girlfriend alone." Said my boyfriend as I felt cornered .
" Do you go to our school?" Asked chad now concerned.
" Wouldn't you like to know?" Antagonize Justin.
" No he doesn't go to our school. Justin just stop it this has gone to far. Chad hang up I'll handle this!" I said as I heard the click on the call as it ended .
" What the hell Justin. I was a joke. That was uncalled for and I don't think your mature enough to not understand this ."I nipped at him. " Do you like him or something tell me now or we are done." He demanded as I knew then it had been two weeks were were together and he was already a red flag. I rubbed my forehead as I wanted to correct him but after all I heard he would be more trouble then it was worth. " Then end it . I don't have time for people who get upset over a guy I go to school with knowing my name." I said plainly. The phone clicked and I went to bed as my fun was ruined. The next day I found Chad as he looked at me as I felt I owed him an explanation. I came to him as I handed him the directory book as I looked at him as he made a face like he wasn't sure of me at all. We didn't run in the same crowd . In fact I was the scary witch girl . But he tolerated me and never was mean to me. " I'm sorry about last night Chad. It won't happen again. This is how I got your number. I didn't write it down don't worry." I said as I looked at him as he nodded taking the book I offered as I nodded to leave. I was walking away when I heard him say it." You need to get a better boyfriend. He is a real jerk." He said as I turned to look at him . " I'm working on it. I'm not with him anymore and thanks for your concern." I said as I walked away from him. Dana came over my mom's house as she needed some money from her dad and noticed I was quiet as I thought about what happened this week as Chad didn't really avoid me as me more avoiding him since our last interaction. " Why are you so quiet?" She said as she was going to the movies and was supposed to take me out as my time away from the house as I locked myself in my room most days and refused to come out unless for school and work. Me and her was dropped off at the movie theater as she ordered tickets I don't even remember the movie. We sat there in the dark as she looked at me. " What's the matter with you? She demanded. " Nothing I called a boy playing a joke and it got out of hand . I fixed it we are good now but he didn't deserve what happened." I said as I wore my heart on my shoulder. " Who is it?" She asked as I knew she wasn't really interested in my problems but it was a question. " Chad." I said softly. " What the fuck you called chad.like from our school Chad?" She confirmed. " Yep that's the one." I confirmed. " You like him?" She said as I knew she was being nosy now. " I like him more then the other boys I have seen. But we don't socialize enough for me to know if I do." I said as the movie premiere came up. " Look Melina your a very pretty girl but if you want to keep a guy interested you have to give him something to stay intrested in." She said like she was all knowing. I was not about to take advice from a girl who last summer she went to Florida with my sister Paula and one weekend in invented a game called virgin . The game was to see how many people they could sleep with in two weeks and who ever pop the virginity of their person won the game. Her and Paula at age fourteen and seventeen was having sex with random people and racked up thirty between them before Dana won as she had sex with a virgin. I knew her intentions were meant to help me but I didn't really value her opinions when it came to boys as she was making more effort to make the pool smaller each time she spread her legs. The next week I was invited to go out with her friends as she decided to take me to the skating rink . She knew every two week I would go to the Eleven o clock matenea when the smaller kids left and the older kids came in till closing. We were all getting ready to go as I was sitting at the vanity getting my makeup done. Earlier my step dad gave me five dollars to go to the rink as that was the entry cost since I brought my own roller blades. Then memaw asked me if I had money as she gave me ten dollars . I didn't correct her as I had free entry for a month for winning all those skate competitions. Then my mom came by and gane me ten dollars too as the three adults didn't asked who gave me money as I didn't deny it. At the end of the night they kept giving me money for food too twenty here and twenty there and I ended up with eighty dollars on top of my pay check and the money I won bowling. I was doing my hair as Dana was talking about how Chad came over and they slept together. My eyes bugged out as I didn't turn but glared at Dana as I asked .
" My Chad." As the room got silent as the other girls didn't know I confessed I liked Chad last week and she went and slept with him last night and said he had a small penis. I knew then that was the last time I told her anything. " Oh my God Melina. He don't even know you exist. Your too scared to do anything anyways." She said as she laughed with her friends. I got up and called my friend hope as she was also going to the rink as I asked her to pick me up instead as I didn't want to be in the room little less the same car as Dana. " Geesh Melina lighten up. He was a bad fuck. I saved you the time." She said without remorse. " Well thank you for that. " I said as I knew she wanted to embarrass me to look cool in front of her friends. " He is just a boy." She said when I wouldn't fight with her. " And you were just my sister. Like I said I'm over it . You can have him . He was never mine to worry about." I said as she scoffed as her friends looked away seeing this was deeper that Dana being her normal self. Hope came as I hopped in her car with her and her older brother George that all the girls fell over even Dana couldn't get close to him and I was in his car. I put my finger out the window and flipped off Dana as she began to scream in anger . We arrived at the skating rink as I was ferious what happened between Dana and Chad as I put on my skates and hit the floor to work out some anger I felt. Chad saw me and came up to me as I slowed down where hope had my water bottle as I drank as I had skated as I was trying to cool off. I grabbed my bottle not stopping and kept skating as he made a point to walk on the floor in tennis shoes and stop me. I didn't want to talk to him or even see him after what he did that I knew. " Hey mel. Um can I borrow like two dollars you know for the concessions." He said as the announcer yelled " no shoes on the rink!" I rolled my eyes and pulled out a five as I held it up no smile, no banter , looked away not saying a word as I waited as he took the money. " Thanks, I'll bring back the change." He said as I saw his crowd including Dana gawking at his persistence to talk to me. " Don't worry about it. Excuse me." I said as I skated past him and he stood there a minute then left the rink. The night was me avoiding him as he was flanked by his usual groopies if desperate girls. Chad would slum it at the rink without his friends. Eric would show up for an hour and think it was lame and leave. Usually after he delivered his parafinila trade to a few girls that like tabs and pills with smiley faces on them. This was the reason he came to do business. I skated until I couldn't anymore as I went to get food as I saw Chad approach me as he stood at my table as I ate my food ignoring him as I usually invited him to sit but this time I didn't say a word. " Here is what I have left thanks," he said as I watched Dana glare at me from the food bar . Then push off and leave . I nodded didn't touch the money or say anything to him as I went to the arcade room that had pool tables and air hockey and Lazer tag. He filled me to the air hockey table as he paid for the spot as I realized he didn't need my money after all. I nodded as I left to get some air at the batting cages in the hill as I took off my skates and pressed the machine to bat some balls in anger. I needed to think I was stuck her for another hour or two before hope wanted to go home. I came down relaxed after thirty minutes of angry propelling ball as I accidentally hit one in the machine in a line drive as the machine stopped and I walked away quickly knowing I messed up the machine . I saw Eric in the parking lot with two girls as he was doing business as I went inside as I learned the less you knew the less they payed attention to you. Chad had his girls around him as my friend Jessi ran to me as she was smiling " Chad is asking for you he wants to talk to you." She said all excited like I was supposed to bow down to the great chat teenage god of middle school. " Come on . This is your chance with him." She said as she grinned. " You tell Chad to go fuck himself." I said as Jessi looked perplexed at my change of attitude. She left and went and told him as he looked at me as I saw him fross the room just then a girl broke out and red and blue lights came as Chad went outside as Eric had left and he saw a girl overdosing in the parking lot over something he gave her. I looked at the cars as they all tried to leave as I got in the car to go home with hope . Chad was taken in to custody as the girl went to the hospital. A few days later he was released since he wasn't the one she named as Eric was escorted out of the school for his part in the overdose. Chad saw me in the hall way and before I could leave he stood in front of me. " Hey mel ." He said carefully as I looked at him with no response. " What did I do? Jessi told me you said to go fuck myself why?" He asked like a naive little puppy. " Because you fucked Dana ." I said as he now looked cornered at my accusations against him. " Yes I did what is she to you?" He said more defensive. " My sister. Well my step sister but she don't want people to one we are related in any way. " I said as he looked at me crestfallen at the realization of who she was to me . " I'm so sorry." He said as he tried to touch my arm as joey approached as the spectacle of Eric being escorted out of the school in cuffs was all the rage. " Hi friend did you see what happened?" Said joey just the distraction I needed to dismiss Chad as I ignored him and started a conversation with Joey like he wasn't even there. " Walk me to my next class." I asked Joey as he took my arm in his as I left Chad there as in the corner of my eye he sighed and left angry .
