Chapter 26: A Confession in the Moonlight
By the time they returned to the ship, the sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky a bruised purple and orange. The crew was celebrating, the decks of the vessel groaning under the weight of the Locke fortune, but Elena retreated to the prow, staring out at the dark water toward the direction of the plains.
Kai found her there, the wind whipping her hair across her face. He stood beside her for a long time in silence, the only sound the rhythmic splashing of the waves against the hull.
"I've spent my whole life wanting this," Kai said quietly, gesturing back toward the treasure-laden deck.
"The gold, the name, the power. But standing here now..."
"Now what?"
"Now it feels like ash."
Elena didn't look at him. "Because you feel guilty."
"No," Kai said, stepping into her line of sight, forcing her to look at him. "Because I realized that the treasure wasn't in the cave."
"What are you talking about?"
"I spent a fortune to buy a key, Elena, but I ended up... I ended up finding something I wasn't prepared to handle."
He struggled with the words, his throat tightening. He was a man of the sea, a man of violence and quick wit, but the language of the heart was a foreign tongue. He wanted to tell her that the thought of her returning to that farm made his blood run cold. He wanted to tell her that when she had looked at him with attraction in the cabin, it was the first time he had felt like something other than a monster.
"I care for you," he blurted out, the words sounding clumsy and inadequate in the vastness of the night. "More than the gold. More than the legacy."
Elena’s expression softened for a fleeting second, her eyes searching his. "You care for me?" she whispered sarcastically. "Is that what this is? The pirate has a conscience?"
"It’s not a conscience," he growled, his frustration boiling over. He took a step closer, his hand hovering near her face, wanting to pull her into him, to kiss her soft lips.
"Then what do you call it? Madness?"
"It’s... it’s a weight."
Elena furrowed her eyebrows together as she pressed her lips together.
"I can't sleep because I'm thinking of your safety. I can't lead my men because I'm looking for your smile. It’s a madness, Elena."
He wanted to say it. The words I love you sat on the tip of his tongue, heavy and terrifying. If he said them, he was vulnerable. If he said them, she had power over him that no blade could ever match.
"I can't let you just be a 'guest' anymore," he finished lamely, his courage failing him at the final hurdle. "You're... you're everything to this ship now. You're everything to me."
Elena looked at him, the rage in her eyes flickering against the sudden, raw vulnerability in his. She reached out, her fingers grazing the scar on his cheek—the mark of their beginning.
"Then prove it," she whispered, her voice a mix of a challenge and a plea. "Take me to Jackson. Help me finish this. And then... maybe then we can talk about what we are."
Kai looked at her, seeing the woman she was becoming—a common girl turned Pirate Princess turned Queen forged in the fires of betrayal. He nodded slowly, accepting his fate.
"We sail for the plains at midnight," he said, his voice a low promise. "And may God help any man who stands in our way."
