Chapter 11: The Courteous Captor
Elena let out a soft, breathless laugh and shook her head as she stood up from the crate she had been resting on. She began walking toward his bedroom, the irony of the situation not lost on her. "For a pirate and my abductor, you’re surprisingly courteous. It’s almost enough to make me forget you dragged me onto this ship against my will."
Kai followed her at a respectful distance, a faint, lopsided grin playing on his lips. "Well, I would prefer it if you viewed yourself as a guest rather than a prisoner."
Elena stopped at the threshold and turned, leaning against the doorframe. "A guest? I had no idea I was invited. I must have missed the formal stationery in all the excitement of being chased through the woods."
Kai raised an eyebrow, giving her a look.
"Fine," she sighed, a small smile finally breaking through her fatigue as she gripped the handle of the door.
"I hope you have a good night’s sleep," he said, his gaze lingering on her face.
"As do you," she replied.

"I should go," Elena said awkwardly, gesturing vaguely at the room behind her. "Get some rest. As you suggested."
"Right. Of course," Kai responded, catching himself. He stepped back and swept his arm out in a mock-regal gesture, clearing the way for her. "Don't let the ship's groaning keep you awake."
"Good night, Kai," she said, stepping into the room.
"I wish you a restful night," he answered, his voice low and steady.
"Sleep well," she murmured, giving him a final, awkward smile as she began to close the heavy wooden door.
"Sleep well, Elena," he replied, his voice barely a whisper as the door clicked shut, leaving her alone in the silence of his world.
