Chapter 31: The Calm Before the Harvest
The morning of Saturday, October 25th, arrived with a crisp, biting wind that carried the scent of woodsmoke and decaying maple leaves. In Covington, the countdown to Halloween was always a local obsession, but this year, the approaching masquerade dance felt different. It was exactly six days away, and a strange, fragile peace had settled over the town.
On the surface, everything looked like a scene from a glossy teen drama. Ethan and Ashley had become the school’s most talked-about new couple, a whirlwind of leather jackets and blonde ponytails. Meanwhile, Katherine and Noah had finally made things "official," their quiet, intense connection a staple of the hallways.
But beneath the surface, the foundations were cracking.
Ethan’s transition into a "nice guy" was a masterpiece of deception. He had stopped the biting sarcasm and the midnight lurks. He was helpful, he was attentive to Ashley, and he treated Katherine with a gentle, brotherly respect that was slowly eroding Noah’s suspicions. Ethan knew that a direct attack on Noah would only end in a stalemate; to truly destroy him, he needed Noah to feel safe. He needed to be the "reformed" friend so that when he finally struck, Noah wouldn't see it coming.
For Katherine, the "perfect" month of dating Noah was haunted by a third person she had never met: Leila.
Noah was a dream—kind, protective, and deeply attentive—but he was also a fortress. Every time the name Leila was mentioned or the conversation drifted toward his past in Lexington, he would shut down. His jaw would tighten, his gaze would distance, and he would steer the conversation back to the present with a finality that left Katherine feeling cold.
"We need a change of scenery," Katherine had declared that morning.
The two girls had piled into Katherine’s car and crossed the state line into West Virginia. Covington’s local shops were picked over, and they needed the sprawling aisles of a big-city Wal-Mart to find the perfect costumes for the dance. But for Katherine, the trip wasn't just about lace and sequins; it was an escape from the weight of the secrets in her own home.
As they pushed a rickety cart through the Halloween department, surrounded by plastic scythes and rubber masks, Katherine felt the pressure behind her ribs finally burst.
"Hey, Ash," Katherine sighed, stopping in front of a row of Victorian-style gowns. She pulled a velvet cape from the rack just to have something to do with her hands. "I’m having trouble with something. I feel like I’m going crazy, and I need you to tell me if I’m being the villain here."
Ashley stopped inspecting a pair of glittery fairy wings and turned to her best friend, her expression shifting from excitement to genuine concern. "I can try to help. What’s going on? Is it Noah?"
"It’s always Noah," Katherine admitted, her voice dropping as a family walked past them. "We’ve been official for a month. Everything is great, really, but... he still won't talk about Leila. Every time I try to bring her up, even just to ask how they met, he shuts me down. Every single time."
"Even now?" Ashley asked, her brow furrowing. "I figured once you guys were 'locked in,' he’d start opening the vault."
"No. It’s like there’s a wall a mile high around that part of his life." Katherine gripped the handle of the shopping cart. "The only other person who can give me answers is Ethan."
Ashley’s eyes widened, and she slowly shook her head, a look of pure disbelief crossing her face. "I thought Noah had a big sister? Veronica?"
"I haven't even met her yet," Katherine said with a frustrated huff. "He says she’s always at the hospital or sleeping off a double shift. It’s like his whole family is made of shadows."
"Kat," Ashley gasped, her voice taking on a warning tone. "You aren't honestly thinking about going behind Noah’s back to ask Ethan about his ex-girlfriend, are you?"
"I have to know, Ash!" Katherine whispered fiercely. "Connie at the theater said he hadn't aged. Ethan said Leila was his 'first love' like it was some tragic epic. I feel like I'm dating a ghost story, and Ethan is the only one with the book."
"Kat, I love you, you know I do," Ashley said, stepping closer and placing a hand on Katherine’s arm. "But you can't go to Ethan about this. He’s my boyfriend now, and he’s been great, but he and Noah have a history of... whatever that was. If you go to him, you’re just inviting drama into your relationship."
"But what if the truth is something I need to know for my own safety?" Katherine asked, her eyes searching Ashley’s. "What if he's hiding something huge?"
"Look," Ashley sighed, leaning against a shelf of pumpkins. "You can't pressure a guy into giving up his trauma. Maybe Leila cheated on him. Maybe she died in a way that haunts him. If you’re that unhappy or that suspicious that you can't trust him without a background check, then maybe you need to break up with him."
The word breakup hit Katherine like a physical blow. She looked down at the linoleum floor, her heart sinking. "Are you mad at me for asking?"
"No," Ashley said softly, her voice melting into a more supportive tone. "I’m not mad. I’m just worried about you, Kitty Kat. I don't want to see you dig up something that was buried for a reason. Just... give him time. If he loves you, he’ll tell you when he’s ready."
Katherine nodded slowly, but as they moved toward the checkout line, the silence between them felt heavy. Ashley was right—pressuring Noah was wrong. But as she caught a glimpse of her own reflection in a dark store window, Katherine knew she couldn't stop. The curiosity wasn't just a whim anymore; it was a survival instinct.
She would wait. She would try to be patient. But if Noah wouldn't open the door, she knew she’d eventually find herself knocking on Ethan’s.
