Chapter 2: Birthday Surprise
Sunlight streamed through curtains as Violet bounded from her bed, her heart light with birthday excitement. Steam curled around her in the shower, washing away the last traces of sleep. She emerged fresh-faced, slipping into her favorite pink dress that sparkled. Her black Mary Janes clicked softly against the hardwood floor as she descended the stairs, each step bringing her closer to the muffled whispers below.
The living room burst into life as she flipped the switch – “SURPRISE!” Her parents yelled. The air was rich with the scent of chocolate, and there on the kitchen table sat a homemade chocolate cake crowned with swirls of fudgy frosting and a rainbow of sprinkles.
Her father presented a package wrapped in midnight blue paper. She torn into it revealing a purple dress that flowed like liquid silk. Her mother’s gift followed – a delicate silver butterfly necklace. Which was perfect because she loved butterflies. Each bite of cake was a symphony of sweetness, the chocolate was so delicious.
“I’m going to the bathroom then I’m headed to the café.” She headed to the downstairs bathroom and shut the door. “May, can I have a word with you?” “Yes honey what is it.” I got fired yesterday but the boss offered me a million dollars for our daughter.” “A million dollars.” She said loudly. Violet quietly opened the door to listen. “Yes and I took it. He’s part of the Mafia. He picks her up tomorrow. He threatened me with a gun. I already have the money.” He said in hushed tones.
Violet heard everything but held in her tears. She left the bathroom and waved goodbye to them as she headed out the door. “I’m very angry at you. I don’t want to lose her.” She started crying. “It will be ok. He promised to take care of her.” May walked into their bedroom and slammed the door.
At the café, Helga’s motherly embrace nearly broke her composure. The familiar warmth of the café wrapped around her like a blanket as she logged into an anonymous help site, her fingers flying across the keyboard in desperate hope. Through the digital darkness came a lifeline – username scorpionflower, promising escape in a sleek black BMW.
Her savior arrived like a character from a romance novel – tall, devastating handsome, with an accent that made her heart flutter. The café’s bell chimed a final farewell as Violet stepped into her new destiny. The black BMW purred through the streets, carrying her toward a waiting private plane and the mysterious Ribero, whose touch sent electricity dancing across her skin.
The plane lifted them leaving behind the only world she’d ever known. Ribero’s revelation about rival mafias and supernatural powers unfolded like a fever dream, each kiss drawing her deeper into a mystical embrace until sleep claimed her in a cascade of tingling sensations. Why did this stranger have such a calming effect on her?
Meanwhile, in a dimly lit room across the city, Ivan’s rage exploded like thunder at the photo on his phone. Violet in Ribero’s arms. Boris moved like a shadow through the night, his gunshots shattering the peaceful suburban silence. May’s scream cut short as crimson bloomed across pristine white carpet, followed by Justin’s final plea dissolving into eternal silence. The cleanup crew was summoned with a few words in Russian, leaving only echoes of the violence that had visited the quiet home.
