Chapter 8: Whispers of the Romanettis
She followed the ribbons. The forest led her to memory. Grief bloomed in wildflowers. Legacy stirred beneath the soil. The truth waits to rise.
Friday morning arrived, and Rosa stirred from her sleep, the echoes of yesterday still lingering in her mind. Her morning routine flowed seamlessly, like a well-rehearsed dance she knew all too well. After freshening up, Rosa prepared for the day ahead, retrieving her chilled water bottles from the fridge—a nightly ritual she never skipped—and replenishing her supply of energy bars.
Today's choice was blue ribbons, a tasty and vibrant contrast to the day before. With her backpack securely on her shoulders and her spirits lifted, she set off on her journey, deliberately veering right to change her usual course. The blue ribbons fluttered gently behind her, fluttering in the breeze, marking her route just as they had the day before. She navigated the familiar trail with ease, constantly aware of the presence behind her, a subtle reassurance and a slight thrill. At the end of the track lay a peaceful clearing, shrouded in calm, where they awaited her— a place of quiet anticipation for an expected yet mysterious encounter.
Rosa stumbled upon an unexpected sight in a quiet, shadowed clearing deep within the woods—four weathered markers that seemed to whisper silent stories of long-forgotten tales. As she moved closer, each step weighted with curiosity and a growing sense of melancholy, the reality gradually took shape in her mind: these were graves, their surfaces engraved with names that immediately tugged at her heartstrings. The names read the Romanettis—their cherished family—whose resting place was now before her, silent and undisturbed. A whirlwind of confusion and sorrow swirled within her; she had always believed these loved ones to rest peacefully in Italy, under the familiar sky of their homeland. Strangely, these markers suggested they might be memorials, but here, in this unfamiliar, foreign land. Were these stones mere tributes, or a part of a deeper, hidden story? The questions lingered, filling the air with an unspoken mystery.
Questions flooded Rosa's mind as tears traced her cheeks unbidden, each drop a testament to the depth of her grief. She felt overwhelmed by sorrow, yet found a fragile comfort in the gentle embrace of the natural surroundings. Rosa carefully adorned each grave with wildflowers—an unspoken, vibrant tribute to lives once lived and memories that lingered. With a heavy heart and final whispers of farewell, she turned to head back home, the mystery of the graves lingering in her thoughts and imprinting itself into her memory, a poignant reminder of the loss she mourned.
Concealed among the lush, green bushes, Giovanni carefully observes his surroundings before initiating communication. With a respectful tone, he addresses his Alpha, ensuring clarity and deference. 'Alpha, Giovanni here, reporting in,' he says, providing the latest updates with precision and attentiveness.
Meanwhile, Luca was working on some overdue paperwork when, on the receiving end of a telepathic link from Giovanni, he prompted Giovanni, 'Proceed with your report, Giovanni.'
Without hesitation, Giovanni briefs, 'The Luna was seen marking her path with blue ribbons and led us to a clearing that harbours four graves.'
Luca glances at Stefano, who is present in the office, conveying the gravity of the discovery. Curious and concerned, Luca probes further, 'Identify the interred,' to which Giovanni solemnly shows, 'It's the Romanetti lineage—both progenitors and their forebears.' The conversation shifts as Luca seeks information about his mate's actions.
Giovanni sees, "Standing before the graves, overcome with sorrow."
Luca reassures Stefano of the situation's severity and instructs Giovanni to ensure his mate's safety while they deliberate their next move.
Acknowledging the command, Giovanni affirms his loyalty with a firm, 'Understood, Alpha,' as they conclude their exchange.
With a furrowed brow, Luca addressed Stefano, "What's unfolding here? Does she know of them?"
His Beta responded thoughtfully, "Uncertainty lingers, yet we must uncover the truth, wouldn't you agree?"
"Indeed," Luca concurred, his mind racing. "But the nature of her awareness regarding our existence perplexes me." He paused before adding, "Consulting an Elder seems our only recourse. Could she possibly share our lineage?" he pondered aloud.
Stefano nodded. "A scent was absent that evening. Your inability to detect it is peculiar. Her gaze alone, those piercing blue eyes, affirmed her as your destined partner." He saw Luca's reaction closely. "This mystery surrounding your mate necessitates further inquiry."
Luca acknowledged the gravity of their situation. "Certainly, but which Elder possesses the insight we seek?" he queried.
Stefano suggested, "Elder Gabriel Lombardi might hold the answers we need. His wisdom regarding our kind is unparalleled." Resolute, Luca reached for the phone. "I concur. Elder Lombardi shall be." He dialled the number and activated the speakerphone so both could listen.
The Elder's voice resonated from the other end, "Greetings, this is Elder Gabriel Lombardi."
"Hello, Elder Gabriel. I am Alpha Luca of the Ferrera Pack. I'm calling to seek your help and advice on a personal matter," Luca explained.
"Yes, Alpha Luca, and please, call me Gabriel. How can I aid you?" replied Gabriel.
"I was wondering if you might have any information regarding the Romanetti family?" inquired Luca.
"Why do you ask?" Gabriel questioned.
"A young woman named Rosa Romano recently rented their old property. She followed a trail to what seemed to be their burial site and cried over the four graves. This woman is also my mate, but I cannot detect any scent from her, which is unusual," Luca explained.
"Alright, Luca. First, congratulations on finding your mate. Secondly, I am unaware of how they died or whether they are indeed deceased. I had no idea they had passed away. There are no records of their deaths that I can provide," Gabriel responded.
"Do you know if the parents had any children?" Luca pressed on.
"Not that I am aware of, but I can investigate further for you," offered Gabriel.
"Yes, please. I would be grateful for that. What puzzles me is that the property should not have been available for rent since it's on our pack's land," Luca noted with appreciation.
"Indeed, that is a mystery on its own. Leave it with me; I will contact you once I have some information. Is that acceptable?" Gabriel proposed.
"Yes, that's fine by me. Is there anything else I should be doing?" Luca agreed.
"Are you keeping your Luna safe?" Gabriel inquired with concern.
"My mate has protection details throughout the day and always when she goes out. Additionally, I visit the house to ensure everything is secure around the perimeter—checking that all doors and windows from the outside," Luca assured him confidently.
Gabriel responded, "That's good. Continue with that and wait until we have the information. I'll get back to you soon with any findings."
Luca replied, "Alright, we'll wait. Thank you very much for your help, Gabriel. Bye."
Gabriel said, "You're welcome, and I'll talk to you soon. Bye, Luca," before ending the call.
Luca and Stefano exchanged glances. Luca remarked, "Well, that went better than expected."
In response, Stefano suggested, "You should inform Giovanni about the developments."
Luca agreed, "I will do that now," and promptly connected with Giovanni to relay Elder Gabriel's insights about his mate and the current situation. He also recommended that Giovanni continue safeguarding his mate until they had more information.
Giovanni acknowledged, 'Yes, Alpha, we will comply,' before they severed the connection.
As the evening approached, Luca glanced at his timepiece and realised it was nearly suppertime. Together, they rose and took their designated places at the dining hall. The assembly awaited the presence of their Alpha and Beta. Upon their arrival and after sitting, someone presented the feast, and all partook of the meal, following Luca, Stefano, and Constantino's lead.
As dinner approached, Luca addressed his kin, detailing recent developments involving his mate and his communication with Elder Gabriel Lombardi. He urged continued vigilance concerning their Luna until someone could gather further intelligence.
In unison, the pack affirmed their allegiance with a resounding "Yes, Alpha!" Luca surveyed his kin with pride for their solidarity before granting them leave.
As the day wound down, Luca's exhaustion was tangible. After saying a restful 'Goodnight' to his brother and best mate, he carried out routine security checks around his mate's property. Yet, an odd sense of unease lingered, giving Luca a strange premonition of impending change. Despite trying to brush off these feelings, they persisted, weaving worry through his thoughts.
Once finished, he headed home, seeking comfort in a shower and the familiar routine of getting ready for bed. Under the doona, Luca's mind replayed the day's events, pondering the mysteries of the Romanetti family and his mate's link to them. As sleep took hold, he murmured a question into the quiet room, only to be met with the mysterious reassurance of the Moon Goddess's voice, promising revelations on the horizon for Alpha Luca.
