Chapter 13
It’s Monday, and for once I don’t have to worry about going to work. Not until tomorrow. It’s a relief, honestly. Balancing part‑time college and my job has been a lot lately, especially now that I’m dating Lola. Things with her have been going really well, and I’m hoping it stays that way.
This morning, I had an idea — something important. I want to introduce her to my family. I’ve already told them about her, and they’re excited for me. They’ve been wanting to meet her for a while now.
I head downstairs and spot my mom in the kitchen talking to one of our neighbors, someone she’s good friends with. I walk over and say, “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”
My mom looks at me. “Not at all. What’s going on, kiddo?”
“I wanted to know when would be a good time and day for you to meet Lola?”
Her whole face lights up. “Oh! Would Wednesday at 7 p.m. work?”
“I know I’m free that day and time, but I’ll ask her and see what she says. I’ll get back to you.”
“Sounds great, hon.”
Our neighbor turns to me. “Hi, Finnegan. How are you?”
“I’m doing good, and you?”
“I’m doing good myself. How’s school and work going?”
“School’s been going good so far, and work has been chaotic but not terrible.”
“I can imagine,” she says with a small laugh. Then she turns back to my mom. “Well, I’ve got to go, Mandy. I’ll see you tomorrow or sometime this week.”
“Nice talking to you, Sheila,” my mom says.
“You have a good day,” I add.
“Thank you, you too,” she replies before heading out.
I grabbed my phone and text Lola.
Hey babe, I wanted to ask and see if you’re free on Wednesday around 7 p.m.?
She replies quickly.
Lola: Yeah, I’m free. Why, what’s going on?
Me: Well… I wanted to introduce you to my parents. They’ve been dying to meet you. I talked to my mom and she asked if that day and time works for you.
Lola: Oh, how exciting! Yes, that day and time works for me. I’d love to meet them.
I smile wide — and yeah, I get a little nervous — but I know everything will be okay.
Me: Okay, great! I’ll pick you up before then. Can’t wait to see you.
Lola: Aw, I can’t wait to see you too. And I can’t wait to meet them. Hopefully they’ll like me — I want to make a good impression.
Me: I know they’ll like you. Just be yourself. Remember to relax and breathe. I’ll be right there with you.
Lola: I appreciate the support. I’ll see you Wednesday then.
After we finish texting, I go back to my mom.
“She’s free that day and time,” I tell her. “She’s excited to meet you guys.”
My mom beams. “Oh, that’s wonderful. We’re looking forward to meeting your girlfriend.”
And with that settled, I go on with the rest of my day — feeling a mix of nerves and excitement for Wednesday.
